The Yorkshire alternative hip hop duo are coming to Richmond in support of their latest single
If you’ve never heard of Ceiling Demons, it’s probably time to prick your ears up. The Yorkshire alternative hip hop duo – comprised of twin brothers Psy Ceiling and Dan Demon – are a force to be reckoned with. Originally formed as a method of paying respect to a lost friend, the duo mix the flow of The Streets with the production of DJ Shadow to make some unique, forceful and thoroughly refreshing rhymes. Now rounding off a spectacular year, which has seen them supporting Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers and gaining support from Tom Robinson, the duo are playing at Bishop Blaize in Richmond on Friday 19th December.
The brothers recently released their latest single, Every Step is Moving Me Up, alongside a “Follow the Lights” by Leeds trip-hop maestros Fold. Every Step Is Moving Me Up is an intensely catchy, gloriously uplifting cut from the duo, featuring smooth rhymes and a simple earworm of a chorus that’s accompanied by retro synth noodling. Folds’ remix strips the track back and adds some dramatic, subtle instrumentation and harsher beats. The remix brings out the full effect of the duo’s rhymes, proving that they can hold their own against the heavyweights.
The single has an extremely positive message behind it, reinforced by the fact that the release is trying to help raise awareness about male suicide. Specifically, Ceiling Demons are looking to help raise awareness for prevention charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).
Ceiling Demons’ attitude toward music and their efforts to raise awareness of an often overlooked subject are testament to how they’re bringing back some sincerity and credibility to hip-hop during an era where the “luxury rap” is in vogue. Their heartfelt, powerful brand of hip hop is not to be missed.
