The clever bods behind the Lecture In The Pub series at Gateshead’s Central Bar, at which the dark and macabre side of history and folklore comes under discussion, are also behind the infinitely more cheery Canny Crafty markets, the next of which takes place on Sunday 6th December.

From humble beginnings (“We started by just asking our friends, who are mostly a bunch of goths,” says organiser Simon) the craft market has grown into a real highlight on the arts scene, providing an outlet for crafters, makers and designers who all share a slightly darker edge. Stalls at the festive-themed December event include bespoke and hand-decorated skulls from Painted Skull; a stall from Bitchcraft, who create creepy decor and accoutrements; artisan soap company Washed Out Soap Co; Life Is But A Dream, who create decorative taxidermy butterflies; gothic and macabre metal jewellery company, Brand Designs; high quality handmade jewellery which looks good enough to eat from Little Miss Delicious; screen-printed t-shirts and customised jackets from Grim Realities; beautiful screen printing from Ink & Toil; vintage and macabre lighting from The Art Death Co.; retro, punk and rock influenced apparel courtesy of From Printers Unknown and many more besides.

Music is also a key element of their events, and DJ Sweetie Armour (Jeepers Peepers) puts a huge effort into creating an upbeat soundtrack of garage, rock and roll and sixties sleaze while you shop.
