Christmas is a thing of the past, yet many of us money-strapped individuals will only just be getting over the January blues. Some, however, will be feeling the strain a lot harder than others. Broke – a timely staged play by all-female theatre company The Paper Birds – examines what it means to be hard up and will be performed at Newcastle’s Live Theatre on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th February.

After proving a sell-out at the Edinburgh Fringe, Broke has taken to the road for a nationwide tour. Like many of the company’s other productions, the story here is embedded in real-life experiences; interviews were conducted with poverty-stricken individuals up and down the UK. The scenarios touch upon all walks of life, spanning gambling addiction, wild leaps of faith and reliance on beans-on-toast. It’s not all doom and gloom however; as is often the case in real life, people find humour in even the most dispiriting of scenarios.

In the wake of the play’s success, its creators have announced they intend it to be the first in a “Class Trilogy.” Whatever comes next, for many of us, this will remain the most relatable – you can bet your bottom dollar on that.

Broke is at the Live Theatre, Newcastle on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th February.
