Enjoy Pagan intrigue and suitably delectable musical accompaniment
Haunted landscapes, isolated villages and pagan traditions. Bring them all together on celluloid and you’ve got a recipe for a classic British folk horror crammed full of mystery. The good keepers of Pop Recs Ltd are hosting a mini-celebration of the niche but instantly recognisable genre by screening two of its most acclaimed movies. It kicks off with The Wicker Man: no, not the terrible 2006 remake with Nicholas Cage but the 1973 cult classic, starring Edward Woodward as a sergeant investigating the disappearance of a young girl on a remote Hebridean island with more than a few secrets.
If you still haven’t had your fill of pagan intrigue then that’s followed by the lesser-known Blood On Satan’s Claw (also known as Satan’s Skin). The 1970 film focuses on a village in 18th century England which becomes deeply affected by the supernatural powers awakened by a deformed skull. In between the films there’s also the chance to hear the wonderful sound of troubadour Barry Hyde playing a selection of songs from The Wicker Man to keep that folk horror vibe alive in the intermission. Just remember to bring a mask for the inevitable sacrifice.
