Reliably informed

Can it really be 20 years since Californian hip-hop duo Blackalicious unleashed their incendiary debut album Nia upon an unsuspecting public? Indeed it can, and what’s more, they will be celebrating that anniversary with a show at Newcastle’s Riverside on Tuesday 6th August.

Bringing together the rhyming and production talents of Chief Xcel and the fantastically named Gift Of Gab, the duo were a breath of fresh air to the hip-hop scene when they first emerged with Gift’s tongue-twisting, multisyllabic, complex rhymes, and have since released further records with the follow-up Blazing Arrow in 2002 and 2005’s The Craft.

While we await the long-promised Volumes 2 and 3 to the 2015 masterpiece Imani, what better way to keep ourselves content than with a live performance of an album that NME placed at number 45 in their 101 Albums To Hear Before You Die and a show that will show off such awesome tracks as the chaotic mixing of The Fabulous Ones and the anti-materialistic epic Deception. I’m also pretty sure they’ll do a rendition of the insanely good Alphabet Aerobics if we’re nice.

In support will be Bristol’s Dizraeli, a one-man master class in combining elements of hip-hop and alternative folk.
