Reliably informed

Rock and hip-hop have never been particularly far away from each other. Both genres are steeped in a history of rebelliousness and are known for generating characters with some serious swagger. Neither are particularly far away from controversy either. So why don’t more bands decide to blend the two together (or indeed do it well)? As their cultured name suggests, Manchester’s Bi:Lingual are pioneering a new wave of groups looking to infuse biting guitar riffs with vicious rhymes. And it works like magic.

Last year the four-piece supported garage-punk upstarts DZ Deathrays when they made their way to Mixtape at The Keys, putting in an immense performance that, whisper it quietly, almost upstaged the main act themselves. From debut single Subject Number to more recent takes, such as Doppelgänger and Spiderwebs, Bi:Lingual are consistently producing a string of uncompromising, insanely intense fusions between two of the most popular genres in the world. If you used to like the sick flows of Rage Against The Machine but haven’t been able to find anyone to fill the void since, Bi:Lingual are ones to watch.

Bi:Lingual play Mixtape at The Keys, Middlesbrough on Tuesday 10th February.
