It’s always a lovely sight when musicians decide they want to support others in their region: that’s exactly what singer-songwriter Charlie Dancer has done alongside his business partner Ollie in setting up Beyond the Wall, a new venture that is looking to help give more exposure to some of the North East’s best bands. They’ve teamed up with the Head of Steam and are taking residency at the venue to showcase a run of events, starting on Saturday 6th December.

On Saturday, post-hardcore dynamos Shades will headline the event. Their recent EP, Existential Ambiguity, or Something, was possibly one of the most interesting alternative releases of the year, blending genres with dark undertones and some seriously creepy spoken word (I Used To Be A Harlot, Then I Stabbed Patroclus is particularly harrowing). Despite their slightly experimental edge, Shades aren’t averse to creating near-anthems either, guaranteeing their set to be an intriguing live experience.

Joining Shades on the night are Hartlepool’s ANTLEZ, who channel the sounds of math rock and jangle-pop in their music while giving their lyrics a distinctive northern twang. Rounding off the line-up is Cohesion. Often compared to the likes of Biffy Clyro and Two Door Cinema Club, the Sunderland indie five-piece are full to the brim with passion and are well known to leave audiences at their gigs salivating.

If this line-up is anything to go by, Beyond the Wall will no doubt become a highlight on the calendars of anyone interested in the burgeoning local music scene.

Shades, Antlez and Cohesion will play at the Head of Steam, Newcastle on Saturday 6th December.
