Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy Birthday to Beethoven. Happy Birthday to you…

A composer who needs no introduction comes to Middlesbrough Town Hall, in the form of the Royal Northern Sinfonia to celebrate his 250th birthday. Beethoven 2020: The Next Generation, from 23rd January until 12th November, is a programme of events paying tribute to Beethoven by performing each of his 9 symphonies in a cycle, brought to life by some of Europe’s best up and coming conductors below the age of 35.

Speaking ahead of the launch of Beethoven 2020, Thorben Dittes, Director of Royal Northern Sinfonia, said: “We want everyone in Middlesbrough to discover for themselves why Beethoven is still relevant today, and we’re excited to be involving audiences and schools in this journey of exploration.”

“Beethoven’s music still inspires young conductors and composers today, and has the potential to engage the widest possible audience. The aim of Beethoven 2020: The Next Generation is to involve emerging artists passionate about Beethoven, to take this music out into the region, and to spark a response to these masterpieces.”

Royal Northern Sinfonia has commissioned five young winning composers to write a piece in response to his body of work. These new commissions will be performed by RNS in the North East in the context of a Beethoven symphony cycle in the 2020 calendar year.
