A tender tale of a young woman’s monumental moment, soundtracked by girl groups of the 60s comes to People’s Theatre
There’s a vast array of wonderful plays to catch at The People’s Theatre, Newcastle over the upcoming months, and one of the stand-outs is a performance of Amanda Whittington’s 1997 play Be My Baby, which runs from Tuesday 19th until Saturday 23rd April.
Set in a dour maternity home in 1964, we follow Mary Adams, a 19 year old coming to terms with the fact she’ll have to give up her baby for adoption, whether she likes it or not. With such a life-changing moment to deal with, Mary finds solace in her record player and the upbeat songs and sounds of the 60s play a major role in keeping her sane. The eponymous song from The Ronettes and others from girl groups like The Shangri-Las provide a backdrop to an intelligent, tender and and sharp piece of theatre.
Be My Baby runs from Tuesday 19th until Saturday 23rd April at People’s Theatre, Newcastle.
