Reliably informed

It’s not often that I’d quote someone else in a news article such as this but Andy Kershaw perhaps put it best when he said that “Barrence Whitfield is the Barrence Whitfield of R&B.” It’s true you know. Despite drawing comparisons to classic R&B singers like Little Richard and Wilson Pickett, Whitfield is an almost unique and full-throttle screamer who keeps the traditions of the genre alive and continues to put on a totally frenzied performance.

His band The Savages are known for laying down some of the phattest, funky grooves that you’re likely to hear this side of George Clinton. On recent album Under the Savage Sky, the combination of Whitfield’s vocals and the four-piece’s rhythms came together on what could be the best soul-punk record ever (or maybe the only soul-punk record ever…) With such a juggernaut of an album under their belt, their gig at the Cluny is set to be a full-on sweaty affair; don’t be surprised if Whitfield gets up to some James Brown-esque hijinks either.

Barrence Whitfield and the Savages come to The Cluny, Newcastle on Wednesday 7th October.
