Not many bands could get away with a song called Funkus The Boogieman, but Newcastle’s Backyard Rhythm Orchestra aren’t just any band. The eclectic party band never fail to get an audience jumping, with their funk-infused brassy bawdiness. They may refer to themselves as “a silly bunch of Geordies making party music” but there’s no doubt that they comprise of some seriously talented musicians with a knack for penning compelling and fun songs.

The tongue-in-cheek story of a surreal character who “is a fun guy to be with” is full of twangy bass, danceable rhythms and an infectious chorus. The seven-minute behemoth veers from brass-led funk to Balkan-influenced rhythmic drumming, with an electric guitar line so persuasive you’ll be on the dance-floor in no time. The single release also features a live arrangement of the song as well as a remix by celebrated local producer and musician Smoove, which has been complemented by a trippy video courtesy of local artist Arms Reach.

The ten-piece band will showcase their unique brand of party-starting funk fun with a gig at The Cluny on Thursday 17th March, so join BYRO and friends and “party like it’s way past your bedtime”.
