You could be forgiven for not knowing a lot about Appalachia if you were asked about it, but actually it’s a region that most people will know reasonably well. Encompassing the cultural region in the Eastern United States that stretches from the southern tip of New York to northern Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia, it’s been a distinctive region in its own right since the late 19th century. Appalachia is also abundant in natural resources, which could well include its musical talent. Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle are just one duo attempting to bring the beauty of Appalachian roots music to the world.

Both of them are master musicians; Anna plays the fiddle, banjo and guitar while Elizabeth sings and plays the banjo. Their skills have earned them a bunch of accolades as individuals; Elizabeth was the first recipient of the Henry Reed Award from the Library of Congress when she was just sixteen and won the 2012 Mike Seeger Award at Folk Alliance International. Meanwhile, Anna is a blue ribbon fiddler and banjo player and is the artistic director of East Kentucky’s traditional music institute.

However, their real uniqueness shines through in their stage performances. They’re known for reviving the lost art of the “crankies,” scrolling storyboards made of sewn fabric or cut paper. They invite their audiences to get up close and personal with their shows to really experience the power of their stories and the magic of their ongoing Appalachian traditions.

Supporting the duo is Newcastle’s very own power folk duo Cath & Phil Tyler, who’ll be bringing their  raw and intimate songs to the tour and are guaranteed to provide the perfect warm-up to Anna & Elizabeth’s intimate sets.

Anna & Elizabeth play at the Bridge Hotel, Newcastle on Thursday 14th May and at The Waiting Room, Eaglescliffe on Sunday 17th May.
