Reliably informed

‘Countrypolitan’ isn’t a word that gets used too often. Encompassing a blend of mid-70s rock and knowing, urbanised, lyrically confident country music, the genre isn’t too popular up here. But there’s obviously a  die-hard set of countrypolitan fans in the region because – after a stint supporting Justin Townes Earle up this neck of the woods not so long ago – Andrew Combs back plying his trade as one of the best young country singers to recently come from Nashville (via Dallas).

Combs’ latest album All These Dreams is a beautifully constructed set of sweetly melodic tunes that hark back to the glory days of Glen Campbell, but with much darker lyrical content. His lilting vocals belie the fact that a lot of his songs have a slightly cynical, often witty edge. Slide guitars, waltzing time signatures and whistling solos are just some of the features on the pretty diverse album. If you’re not that sure about country music and think it’s all rednecks and Dolly Partons, Andrew Combs might be the talent that converts you.

Andrew Combs plays at The Cluny 2, Newcastle on Friday 11th September.
