Ever heard of yarn bombers? Don’t worry, it’s not as violent as it first sounds. It’s a particularly cuddly and highly humorous trend that sees ninja knitters taking over areas of communities and famous landmarks, and covering them in yarn creations, from your traditional hats and scarves to figures and messages. Saltburn is a particularly common target for the yarn bombers, as the pier is often transformed into a colourful smorgasbord of carefully crafted wool.

The world of yarn bombing is surely filled with stories, no matter how silly or seemingly unbelievable. Button Box Theatre’s latest show An Illuminating Yarn focuses on Clare, who attempt to cheer her friend Nina up by giving her a figure taken from the Saltburn pier’s latest yarn bombings. But when accusations start flying around about who stole a tiny Tom Daly and his even more miniature speedos, the Saltburn community might end up cleaning up more than a bit of wool as Clare and Nina’s friendship is put to the test. Darkly comic and at times just that bit surreal, An Illuminating Yarn is sure to be one of the must-see shows of the Alphabetti’s run of Edinburgh previews.

An Illuminating Yarn comes to Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle on Thursday 23rd July.
