As far as alternative ways of celebrating Bonfire Night go, I doubt they come more unique than this. A DIY promotion collective of Massa Confusa’s Ally Morton and Snakes Don’t Belong In Alaska’s Chris Watson, Against The Grain strives to bring the most unique and innovative acts together for bills that relish in absolutely delightful eclecticism.

Their next event, taking place on Saturday 5th November at Gateshead’s Old Police House features experimental electronics from Whitley Bay’s Waskerley Way, the anti-pop of Edinburgh outfit Sheep, spoken word punk from The Eagertongue, the enigmatic Old Police House resident SW1n-Hunter, and drones that are a bit like ‘arsenic in your tea’ courtesy of Stealing Kittens.

Against The Grain is an expansion of Morton’s Massa Confusa Presents, which he describes as an “opportunity for [him] to take on a series of one-off events outside of Massa Confusa” in response to overwhelming requests from both local and touring bands. You needn’t look further than how diverse this bill is to get a sense of the opportunities Against The Grain is offering, taking all corners of the leftfield and throwing them together in one glorious mixture of surreal and boldly unique projects and groups.
