Abel Raise The Cain are back and are set to release their brand new single History Scenes on Friday 19th April. The release is just before their Stockton Calling performance on Saturday 20th April, a festival that ARTC bassist Gary Hughes explains is very close to their heart.
We absolutely love playing Stockton Calling and we’ve been very lucky to be involved in quite a few of them. We opened up the Georgian Theatre stage last year to a full house and then, as we left the stage, we were asked to fill in for a cancellation on the KU Bar stage. Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity and enjoyed playing to both crowds. There’s just something special about the atmosphere all day.
It’s thanks to the team at Stockton Calling that we’re still going and this release more than likely wouldn’t have happened without them offering us this slot, so we wanted to get the track out especially for the festival.”
The open minutes of the track presents a more tender and stripped down folky sound than previous ARTC offerings. Singer Sean Crichton’s deep, smokey vocals nestle nicely on a bed of haunting keys, delicate guitar and string arrangements, reminiscent of DeVotchka. The band are seasoned pros at making soundscapes that you can’t help but visualise and this track is no different, evoking an abandoned carousel of childhood memories as the song waltzes its way through the amygdala.
There is a little treat for fans of the band’s epic post-rock sound two-thirds of the way through as the track finally lives up to its unsaid promise of a euphoric ascent into a climactic ending, something else this band does with aplomb. Arcade Fire-esque tapestry of choral O’s, guitar solos and other ear pleasing loveliness bring the track to a close and make you glad that Stockton Calling asked them back again this year.
Abel Raise The Cain perform at the ARC 2 stage of Stockton Calling on Saturday 20th April.
