Bradford-born, Newcastle-based neo-soul singer Kate Bond drops her brand new single, Yasmine. The song is about her best friend and touches on toxic relationships and mental health struggles. However, despite the dark content matter, the tone of the song feels quite Summery and light and features a moreishly melodious vocal from Kate

Here, Kate gives us a deeper insight into what inspired the song…

My music is inspired by jazz, neo-soul and R&B. I grew up in Bradford and when I was younger used to sing in my dad’s jazz band singing anything from Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong to Edith Piaf. I then started to grow into my own style with heavy influence from hip hop female rappers such as Noname and Little Simz and more contemporary soul such as Amy Winehouse and Joy Crookes.

The inspiration for Yasmine came after my best friend asked me to write a song about her on a night out. At the time she was suffering from overthinking, a mental health issue where you constantly analyse moments from the past, which would frustrate her. At the same time, my dad was diagnosed with cancer, and I fell into an unhealthy relationship with someone. I think our general suffering at this time made room for this song, which has a very upbeat vibe but lyrically tells of quite a difficult time in both our lives.

Lyrically, the main chorus of the song shows how I would constantly go to Yasmine for advice about this toxic partner. Yasmine always gives the most savage and honest advice, which doesn’t sugar coat anything.

The first verse, metaphorically describes the two and through of a toxic relationship. I sing ‘he plants the seed rooted in the debt I breed, he’s got the best of me,’ showing the personal situation I was in at the time and how this man managed to manipulate me.

The second verse carries on this theme but goes on to personify Yasmine’s mental health as a toxic partner. I sing ‘this bitch in her mind she’s always unkind watches episodes of her life on rewind.’ And ‘she never splits the bill, always wants to just chill, goes round in circles just to catch a thrill, when she asks for rent she gets left on read, this girl continues to squat in her subconscious, she tries to change the address, but they just go round and round and round again.’
