Reliably informed

There is a certain triumph to The Noise & The Naïve’s performance tonight; they decided to make music in this guise after seeing a Shonen Knife show a couple of years ago, which does bookend things for them rather poetically. This is arguably the best I’ve ever seen them, brimming with confidence and menace – the personality of this pretty special group shines though.

Shonen Knife are in gleeful form, playing songs predominantly from their new LP Sweet Candy Power. There’s an irresistibility to this flavor of bubblegum, as they combine the ethos of The Ramones, The Beach Boys and 60s girls groups effortlessly and uncynically. They blast through these songs at what feels like a canter, with a joyousness and sincerity that’s hard to come by.
