Only Lynks could transform my bleary two-day hangover into effortless joy on a Sunday night.

The iridescent artist/performer/musician is taking on The Cluny 2 tonight and the atmosphere is electric before they’ve even entered. People wear t-shirts emblazoned with ‘LYNKS MADE ME DO IT.’ I’m not sure what Lynks made them do, but as they storm the stage to rapture in a devil-horned sequinned one-piece, I think I can understand why.

Flanked by a back-up trio of so-called Lynx Shower Gels, Lynks’ presence verges on the surreal. They seem like a kind of new-age Antichrist, peddling techno pop and preaching a queer revolution.

For what the stage lacks in instruments, Lynks makes up for in movement. Launching into tracks like Everyone’s Hot (And I’m Not), Lynks bounces around the stage as if in a futuristic fitness video — now clad in leather — declaring “everyone’s a model and I’m a librarian.” It’s witty and surprisingly self-effacing.

Lynks describes their music as ‘a big musical coping mechanism’. Never have coping mechanisms looked, or felt this good. It’s true — some of their lyrics are pretty dark. Lynks performs Silly Boy — a track about toxic masculinity — and the infamous Str8 Acting about the glorification of heterosexuality. Amidst Lynks’ painful vulnerability though, there’s a real sense of solidarity. What sets Lynks apart is their ability to turn potential gloom into sparkling affirmation. It’s contagious.

Lynks declares themselves ‘the best musician in the entire world’. If buzz and energy is anything to go by, I don’t think they’re that far off…
