Reliably informed

You know it’s going to be a good night when the sound check prompts spontaneous applause from the assembled early birds, a moment which proved to set the tone for the whole evening.

Despite a limited audience, the cosy intimacy of The Lost Wanderer makes you feel right at home, with its vintage cinema seats, second-hand books and plants on every surface.

The night opened with the rich and emotive storytelling of JP Worsfold, bringing his trademark blend of gentle melancholy, poetry and soaring melodies. Holding the room with ease, Worsfold is at his best when weaving meandering tales of nature and the fleeting magic in love and life, painting vivid images of the Scottish islands, the Cumbrian fells and everywhere in between.

A friend and mentor of Georgina Gale, Worsfold handed over the stage with all the pride of an older brother, just four years after she contacted him for song-writing advice. Gale took pains to mention his support and influence on her way to this point in her career, newly signed by Newcastle’s Sapien Records and heading for a debut single release early next year.

Though it took a few songs for her nerves to settle, Gale is irresistibly endearing, combining innocence and vulnerability with a fiery determination and passion that sets her apart from the crowd.

Her upcoming single release Let Down, with a chorus that stays in your head long after the gig is over, is a promising sign of things to come, while the standout audience favourite Manchild had just the right amount of sass and attitude to ensure its presence on any break-up playlist.

The night had all the compelling charm that you’d expect from a pair of musicians who’ve learned their trade in the northern folk scene, and though you can hear the echoes of those who influenced their songwriting, Gale and Worsfold share a skill for spinning their own kind of magic, shot through with heartfelt honesty and emotion.
