Damian Robinson enjoys a powerful show from the local kings of stoner rock

Ednburgh’s Earl of Hell who create the first mosh pits of the night at the sold-out Little Buildings. Full of confidence right from the start, and with a unique stage presence, Earl of Hell’s Hang ‘em High is the standout in a set full of ear-splitting metal and solid riffs.
The night belonged to the local kings of stoner rock, Dunes. Back with new songs from new album Gargoyle, it’s new single Walk Into The Waves that stands out in a set steeped in power, attitude and edge. Having long been one of the best bands on the local scene, Dunes strike with a deliberate energy from the start and hold it at consistent pace as they move through a number of hugely powerful tunes including My Favourite Shot Gun and Circle. As always, it’s the outros and deliberate hypnotic metal/rock grooves which prove the most interesting element of Dunes’ live set, providing an opportunity for the three-piece to showcase their powerful musicality and drive home the interesting edges of their sound, and proving they’re still one of the best live acts on the scene.
