We chat to the Newcastle-based hip-hop artist as he drops Kamoze, his first solo single since 2018
Newcastle-based rapper, songwriter and producer, Max Gavins drops his new single Kamoze, via Millennial Music. The versatile artist has been a staple in the North-East scene for a decade and this is his first solo release since 2018.
The track, which chats about a night out on the sesh, is groovy club banger complete with dark synth lines, self-produced instrumentals and sing-along chorus.
We chat with Max about him and his latest musical offering…
How are you and what have you been up to over lockdown?
I’m good, the last year and a half has obviously been a bit ropey at times but overall good! I’ve been working really hard on music stuff through lockdown, getting a bunch of new songs and beats done, and also looking after the day-to-day running of the label Millennial Music. We’ve put out tracks from Sågaboi, NE-O, Frankie Jobling and Bran Capri, so that’s kept me quite busy too.
How would you describe your musical style?
I think it varies. Someone once told me they never know what they’re getting stylistically when they press play on a Max Gavins track, and I take great pride in that. I like trying different things and being genre-fluid, but throughout all my songs I feel there is usually an element of honesty and reflectiveness, whether it’s presented in a funny, cheeky, self-deprecating way, or a sad, depressing one.
Tell us more about your latest single, Kamoze. What is it about and how does it differ from previous releases?
Kamoze is a bit more “clubby” than my previous stuff. It’s fun, bouncy and something to dance to. It’s a bit of a tongue-in-cheek look at the random madness that can come on a night out, as well as the “on top of the world” feelings that come with it, even if they’re not always justified haha.
This is your first solo release since 2018. Why was now the right time to start releasing music again?
Because it’s been waaaaay too long. I’ve been focussed on other things, working behind the scenes and producing and writing, but lockdown gave me the opportunity to focus on making some new solo stuff. I felt I’d hit a new level in terms of writing and that I was finally comfortable with putting things out again.
Will you be releasing more music in the near future?
Absolutely. As I said I’ve made so many tracks over the course of the last few months that I’ll definitely be putting stuff out on a regular basis starting from Kamoze, so keep an eye out!
