North-East singer-songwriter and rising star Andrew Cushin follows up It’s Gonna Get Better and Waiting For The Rain with his brand new single Where’s My Family Gone. To add a bit of prestige to this release, Andrew teamed up with none other than Noel Gallagher, who after hearing an early demo of the track offered to produce and perform on the track.

We caught up with the talented musician to talk about him and his latest musical offering…

How did you get into writing and performing music? Who were your music inspirations growing up?
I got into playing live music when I was 18, my first gig was supporting a band made up of “bank managers” who worked with my mam. It was a very peculiar night but a great one nonetheless. I suppose I owe that band a lot, they were kind enough to give me my first gig. I’ll have to repay them one day. My musical influences came and still come from artists such as Donovan, Bob Dylan, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, The Beatles. I also love bands like The Enemy, JET, The Rifles, Shack… bang into Michael Kiwanuka at the minute as well.

You used to play in goal for the non-league side Newcastle Benfield’s youth team, which is where you met your (now) manager. Who is your goalkeeping hero and do you play much football these days?
Unfortunately I can’t play football anymore, we had the conversion when we got our first deal. My fingers have become too vital to my career, however it certainly wasn’t an easy decision hanging the gloves up. My goalkeeping hero was Shay Given back when he was at the toon. Had the pleasure of meeting him as a youngster once or twice, top bloke.

What’s your songwriting process like?
My songwriting process varies, my better songs come from me picking the guitar up one day and just plucking a song from the sky. Closing my eyes and singing from the heart. Other songs (that are still great) take a little extra time, a little figuring out I suppose you could say. I’m fortunate that I have a lot of poems I’ve written over the years so if I’m stuck for lyrics or lines, I just pull one from an old poem.

Tell us more about your new single. Where’s My Family Gone?
The new single “Where’s My Family Gone” is an extremely personal song that has been produced by none other than Noel Gallagher. Noel was also kind enough to play on the record, with melodic backing vocals and an Oasis like guitar solo, this song is an absolute stomper. The song also features Mike Rowe on keys, Jeremy Stacey on drums, Noel on bass, Noel on BV’s and Noel on electric. It was co-produced by Paul “Strangeboy” Stacey, another lad that’s done an excellent job.

Noel Gallagher produced, played guitar and sang backing vocals on the new single. What was it like working with him?
Going back to what I said earlier, the tune is great. That fact that it actually features Noel is a bonus. I’m not going to sit here and say that I was in awe of everything Noel did because I knew that I wasn’t there to do that. I saw this 5 days in the studio as an opportunity to thank Noel for everything he’s done for me and also get my head down and graft on this song and impress him as much as I could, which I’m hoping I did. There’s no doubt about it, Noel was the brains behind the structure of this song but I certainly wasn’t sat in the corner with a Noel Gallagher keyring staring into the back of his head like a fan-boy. I was there to work, as was he and as was everyone else involved. I think Noel knew this and I’m hoping he respects me for it.

What’s next for you, have you got anything exciting in the pipeline?
Well providing Covid subsides at some point, we have all the festivals that were cancelled this year, to play next such as Leeds, Reading, Victorious, board masters, this is tomorrow + many many more… Very exciting times!
