Focus: Vin Kay

Who are you and where are you from?
Hey! My name is Vin Kay, a Persian singer-songwriter based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

What is it you do?
I write, sing and perform, I also create content on social media about my music and artistic identity. I create my own work and ideas all the time. From recording and editing my own videos to painting my own artwork. That being said, Im always open to collaborating with others and seeing ideas from different perspectives!

How long have you been doing it?
Music has been part of my life since I was really young. I started learning instruments at the age of five and started singing music covers on social media at the age of thirteen.

What inspires you?
Honestly, everything. Everything is art, and art inspires me. No matter what kind of art it is, whether it’s music, painting, performance, fashion, film… Ive always been passionate about creating and it’s hard to imagine a life without it. Artists like Sade, Snoh Aalegra, Michael Jackson, Tyler the creator, Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu have all inspired me in different ways.

Tell us about your music.
My music is mainly rooted in neo-soul, but I always love to blend my sound with other genres like alternative R&B, Jazz, bedroom pop, funk, experimental music and more! As you can tell, Im very open to exploring, combining and constantly learning. This is just the start for me.

More than anything, I want to connect to people who are looking for a connection without judgment. People with big dreams, people who are moving towards their future without worrying who’s watching,
people who lead with empathy, people who are in love, people who are trying to keep humanity alive and the world a safer place. These are the people I hope my music reaches.

What have you got coming up in the future?
At the moment, my debut single Freckles is coming out on the 9th of July! While it’s my first official release, I have a lot planned out for the future. Including new music, collaboration, live shows, and more content 🙂 I will also be sharing a Behind-the-scenes video on YouTube of the process behind ‘the song and how it came be. For me, ‘Freckles’ also represents the closing of a chapter – something I needed to get out and off my chest before stepping into a new era with my future releases.
