Reliably informed

Having spent the last year honing their sardonic Britpop style, Newcastle-based five-piece Stannington prepare to release their debut single, Through You, a catchy slice of jangly indie pop. Here, they tell us about the formation of the band, their influences, and what’s coming up…

Who are you and where are you from?

We go by Stannington. We are Lewis Thompson (vocals), Mark McGarry (guitars), Louis Clark (bass), Charlie Radford (drums) and recent addition Joe Munsey (guitars). We’re from Northumberland, Tyneside and County Durham.

What is it you do?

We write, perform and record as a group – taking influence from the early 1990s British guitar pop sound.

How long have you been doing it?

We started writing and rehearsing in the summer of 2022. The first eighteen months of the project saw a couple of line up changes and a general evolution of the sound.

What inspires you?

Our friends and the places we’re from.

Tell us about your music

In an effort to counter the angular and disjointed breed of post-punk music so commonly found, we aimed to differentiate our style by taking reference from a more traditional songwriting approach. It came naturally but we recognised our influences instantly, combining traditional folk and the early 1990s Britpop sound with a post-punk bite.

What have you got coming up in the future?

We’re releasing our first single, Through You, on 28th June via Zeche Records, a newly-established label. We’ve got a single release show on Saturday 29th June at The Lubber Fiend with local noise pop group Baker Island and Yorkshire’s Vehicle. After we’ve completed our upcoming short tour of the UK in August, we’ll take some time to finish recording our first EP that we’ve provisionally titled Farmers’ Market. You’ll probably hear that in 2025.

Where can people find out more about you?

Instagram is your best bet. Failing that, you can reach us at [email protected]If you’d like to hear our music, then you can head over to Bandcamp or Spotify.
