Focus: Shifty Nights

Who are you and where are you from? 
My name is Craig Young AKA Shifty Nights and I’m based in Consett County Durham

What is it you do? 
I’m a Producer under the name Shifty Nights and I DJ and present a radio show under the name The Beast

How long have you been doing it?
I’ve been producing for just over a year now, I was playing Football Manager on night shift at work (hence the name) and I thought I was wasting my time so I got Fruity Loops and with the help of Youtube, I set about making tunes. I’ve been a DJ for 15-plus years and this felt like a step I should have taken years ago.

What inspires you? 
I’ve been into dance music since I heard my first rave tape at the tender age of 12 and I  can honestly say it changed my life, I can remember being blown away because I could hear what tune was coming in next, 28 years later and I can be blown away hearing new music as I was back then. Musically I’m inspired by DJs such as Sherelle, Special Request, The Prodigy, Bass Generator, I Jordan and Prozak. I still love going out for a dance so World Headquarters is also a massive inspiration, I love the diverse crowd and musical styles you can hear in there and I don’t feel out of place even though I’m approaching 41 haha.

Tell us about your music.
As I grew up listening to rave music my music usually has elements of that in, I also love acid music so you can often find a nice and dirty acid baseline in there, I like to make tunes that are around 160 bpm but I also make slightly slower stuff around 140 bpm but every track is underpinned with lovely bass.

What have you got coming up in the future?
I’ve got more releases planned for my Spotify etc, I’ve got a remix of The Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch up that’s going to be a free download on Soundcloud and the longer term plan is to get some kind of live setup together and play some live gigs.
