The Hexham-based, intergalactic soundmakers tell us all about themselves as they release their debut single, Left Behind
What is it you do?
We have been assigned a task from our leaders to explore and create audio transmission data which is funky and stimulates the heads, stirs the heart and moves the bodies of humans and Aldermaran 4 inhabitants alike. We have established a headquarters, known as the ‘Funk Module’ from which we have been generating data, assimilating and absorbing many forms of musical audio information to enable us to finally transmit ourselves. We have enlisted earthbound help with what is known as singing here, as our vocal chords do not elicit sounds that are melodic to the human ear.
How long have you been doing it?
We have been doing this mission for 3 Earth years as S.K.X – that is 44 years in Aldermaran 4 time.
What inspires you?
We have been inspired by many things musically and otherwise. We had hoped to land on Earth in the 1970’s but a solar storm diverted our course in time and space. Humans have created so much art that is truly inspiring. Musically the voices of Curtis Mayfield, Al Green and Nina Simone, the sounds of James Brown, Steely Dan, Fela Kuti, Jimi Tenor, Chic Organisation and Black Coffee (the artist, though the hot liquid is something we can absorb too) all stimulate us. We are also inspired by the analog synthesiser technology your species have created, though it’s rudimentary by Aldermaran 4 standards! We are also inspired by sunshine and people moving their bodies in unison to music.
Tell us about your music.
Our music has been developed in our HQ the Funk Module. We have a growing list of audio transmission’s ready to go which with our vocal collaborators blend funk, electronic technology, guitars, keyboards, brass, programmed beats and percussion instruments to make a sound that could be described as cosmic funk, disco, soulful, afrohouse influenced dance music.
What have you got coming up in the future?
Our first transmission we have called Left Behind and it features Wylam-based chanteuse Osaka Jo on vocals. It is available from 28th October 2022. We have further transmissions planned, the next being in November. We plan live transmissions after that.
