We find out all we can about indie music-maker as he releases his new single, Half Asleep
Who are you and where are you from?
I am Phantom Parts, destroyer of worlds and cuddler of penguins, aka Skip Wallah, aka Jimmy 12 Toes, no one has ever called me any of these names.
What is it you do?
I sit at home and make weird indie music at home on the old computer. I used to be in a band for a while, but this way I get to make all the decisions. I sing, play guitar, bass and drums (kind of). I also produce, mix and master (kind of).
How long have you been doing it?
Too long! I’ve been making music and keeping it to myself for years and years. I’ve eventually got my production skills up to a standard where I’m happy to put it out there.
What inspires you?
‘Inspires’ probably isn’t the right word. Lots of things make me angry though, and then I write songs about those things. The main thing that gets me angry is that I have to go to work, and it’s rubbish, I’ve had loads of jobs, and they’ve all been rubbish. I really don’t understand how people can bring kids into this world, just so they have to grow up and spend most of their time at work, and then people have the cheek to say ‘they love their children more than anything in the world’ and ‘they would do anything for their kids’, yeah, they would do anything for their kids, apart from not bringing them into this awful world in the first place that is.
Tell us about your music.
My music varies between 80s/90s indie and post-punk most of the time, it can also lean a little towards shoegaze and psychedelia at times. The vocals, on the other hand, sound like an alien with tonsillitis. I’m a big fan of the likes of The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr and that kind of thing, though my musical taste generally speaking, ranges through the ages including loads of guitar bands from 60s pop/rock to 2000s post-punk revival.
What have you got coming up in the future?
I have finished 5 tracks so far, and my plan is to release them every 2 weeks, starting with Half Asleep on 21st July. I’ve got a good few more written that need rerecording that I’m currently working on, so I plan to just keep releasing a track at a time every 2-3 weeks after that too.
Where can people find out more about you?
sites.google.com/view/phantomparts is my website (very professional, I know) where I have links to Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud and more.
