Reliably informed

Who are you?
We are Austin, Alex and Conor and make up 3 piece, electro-indie outfit “Motel Carnation”, originally from Northumberland, Scarbrough and Ipswich respectively and settling in the toon.

What is it you do?
We write and perform Indie/alternative music which has previously been described as “sultry, dark electronic inspired indie” (with a touch of oof).

How long have you been doing it?
We emerged from our 6 month behind the scenes planning stage and onto the internet in April of 2019. We released 2 singles in quick succession in April and June of the same year before having our debut run out at a sold out Head of Steam basement in July of 2019. Fast forward to present times and in the interim we dropped a 3rd single, played two more sold out shows, dropped a lockdown cover and even had our first run out in London at the start of 2020.

Despite the absolute write off year that 2020 was, we were still incredibly privileged to squeeze in the first socially distanced local show in the North East at Tynebank Brewery (thanks to their collaboration with Little Buildings) between lockdown 1 and 2, but honestly it’s all been a bit of a blur.

Just shy of two years maybe?

What inspires you?
We’re all collectively into the same sort of core artists, the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Foals, The Neighbourhood and Glass Animals which all have an influence in our sound but at the same time, we all have our own little spin-off genres that we obsess over. We indulge in a full spectrum of Pop, trap and electronic music which has really started to impact the direction of our writing as we dive further into 2021.

Tell us about your music.
Honestly, you tell us…

There are flashes of guitar driven choruses which will fall into 808 driven bridge sections and at the moment with it being such an amalgamation of influences impacting on our “genre” we’re letting people make their own minds up these days (sorry).

What have you got coming up in the future?
We’re absolutely ecstatic to be championed as part of BBC Introducing in the North East’s ‘Top Picks for 2021’ alongside nine other fantastic artists and we welcome the pressure to really deliver something special this year.

Luckily, we’ve been in the studio and have new material cooking. It’s in the slow cooker mind but definitely on its way. We promise.

In terms of live shows, we’re absolutely gasping to get back on stage. We had a number of festival appearances arranged for 2020 which understandably had to be postponed but we’re hoping to capitalise on their rearranged dates this year. Main events to highlight are 4th May Hit the North Festival, 19th June Hellapalooza and rumours of another headliner with some pretty tasty support are bubbling away on Twitter, that’s if Boris lets us out to play again. Rest assured we won’t be hard to find.

Where can people find out more about you?
