Focus: Mac Turner

Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Mac Turner or “Maca” to my dearest I am a multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer-songwriter.

What is it you do?
Everything. I compose my own music, write my own lyrics, record everything myself and mix and master the finished product, as well as promote and market myself.

How long have you been doing it?
Since I took my first breath. I guess my parents had an idea I would be into music, not sure if it was me memorising every word to half of Bob Marley’s songs at three years old or jumping around the bedroom with my ma’s tights on giving it big rockstar kicks in the mirror that gave it away.

What inspires you?
Iconic pieces of music. I love the idea of something being so brilliant it stands as a great song forever. I also take influence from art, politics, relationships, and anything that makes me feel something, whatever emotion that may be I’ll try to write a song about it. My dog dies I wrote a song about it… I ran out of milk, I wrote a song about it… I won on a scratch card…. you guessed it… I wrote a song about it.

Tell us about your music.
Everything I make is a reflection of myself on the day I created the piece. I think I should make it public that most of the songs I make are written and recorded in a day even if it takes me a full day and night to do it. This is because I find it easier to hold onto the emotion of the song whilst the creation process is happening I feel as though going back to it at a different time has an effect on the impact of the emotion of the song. Just because I was sad yesterday does not mean I’ll be sad today and in that, the emotion used to write the song is gone.

What have you got coming up in the future?
After the success of my near sell-out single say on vinyl, I’m dropping my new album Evolve this month (April 2023) and have plans for gigs and more songs and albums in the forthcoming future.
