Who are you and where are you from?
We are LYRAS, a band based in the North East. Our lead singer and drummer are from Scotland, keys player is from Grimsby and bassist and guitarist are from Newcastle.

What is it you do?
We are a contemporary R&B band with nods to jazz, pop and neo-soul.

How long have you been doing it?
We formed into the current lineup a few months before the pandemic hit, it was an interesting challenge to keep momentum going through lockdown but we managed to release our first single out of the studio session we squeezed in in March.

What inspires you?
We all have different early influences including folk, jazz, rock and musical theatre so our inspirations are influences are definitely eclectic. Ada (lead singer) takes a lot of inspiration for her lyrics through personal experiences and often touches on themes including love, lust, self discovery and family. Our latest single, ‘The Journey’ was written about struggling with self worth and trying to come out the other end with a positive experience – think of it as a bit of a pep talk when you’re feeling down!

Tell us about your music
We work pretty collaboratively as a band which made producing new music during the lockdown quite difficult – our ideal creating experience is all being in the same room throwing our two cents in, however it has meant we’ve had to adapt and figure out the best way to create remotely as well. We love music that has groove and try to get that into our music whenever possible, so our creative process often starts that way with a groove and then Ada will take it away and start writing melody and lyrics over the top. Other times she will come with fuller ideas to the band. We like changing it up to see how we can get different types of songs out of different approaches as we’re still a fairly new band so are still experimenting with our sound a lot.

What have you got coming up in the future?
We are releasing a single called The Journey on Friday 23rd April (pre-save here) with a livestream performance at 7:30pm, so we’re busy pushing that and preparing for when live gigs come back. We have some exciting gigs to announce soon including a couple up in Scotland which we can’t wait for!
