Who are you?
My name is Jay Dawson and I’m the Director of Shutter Productions.

What is it you do?
I am a music photographer and video director. I operate out of a studio in Newcastle City Centre and specialise in producing live sessions and music videos.

How long have you been doing it?
I have been photographing live music events under my own name ‘Jay Dawson’ for 11 years but changed the name to Shutter Productions in 2015 as I began to focus more on video production. Since then I have produced acoustic sessions for emerging artists, show-reels for wedding bands and live performances for various regional promoters. I soon decided I needed a dedicated space to produce sessions, so I opened my first City Centre studio at B&D studios in 2018 and have since moved to a larger space in Carliol Square which is accessible 24/7.

What inspires you?
Original live music and watching people do what they love. Seeing live performances- whether at a gig or in s private studio setting makes me happy – I’ve always had a passion for hearing music live and it constantly reminds me why I do what I do.

Tell us about your work.
At the moment, the main focus of Shutter Productions is on emerging rappers in the North East but I still work with singer-songwriters and bands on occasion. My Facebook page quickly became seen as a platform to help bring local talent to the spotlight including the likes of Just B, Shakk, 90BR0, Eyeconic, Abi Nyxx, Zico MC and Max Gavins (just to name a few).  In February 2019, I partnered up with NE RISING and since then I have produced over 20 studio sessions for their Facebook page which has resulted in a significant rise in their engagement and page followers.

What have you got coming up in the future?
I will be launching a platform later this year which I believe is going to create immense value for the UK Music Scene. Go follow ‘Shutter Productions’ for updates as they come.

…I’d like to give a massive shout out to:

Tommy Byron (The Dog & Parrot) for allowing me day time access to his former venue ‘Jumpin Jacks’ where I filmed my first acoustic sessions .

Sam Wright (Wright Music and Management) for inviting me to my first local hip hop event at Barca in Tynemouth where I discovered the likes of 90BR0, Nato North East, Max Gavins, John Dole and Johno Ramsey.

Johno Ramsey from Ride Music specifically for introducing me to my first wave of local rappers during our collaborative ‘Got Bars’ sessions which you can find on the Ride Music Youtube channel.
