Reliably informed

Stockton-based alt. folk songwriter Jake Holt releases his new EP, Identity Crisis, on 1st March. Here, we find out all we can about the artist.

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Jake Holt and I’m from Stockton-on-Tees

What is it you do?

I’m a singer songwriter, I play alt. folk on a range of instruments and do everything myself in house

How long have you been doing it?

I’ve been performing professionally since I was 15 years old as a busker (I’m 33 now) and before that I would regularly perform at school. I don’t really remember a time when I wasn’t performing to some degree

What inspires you?

I have a love of music throughout the 20th Century, blues, folk revival of the 60s, the rise of rock and heavy metal and more recently I’ve been inspired by traditional British folk music, I love the storytelling aspect of it and I try to tell a story with my songs using rock and blues as my musical vocabulary

Tell us about your music

Everything I write tends to be very personal and linked to personal events in my life, my EP is based on my final year of university where I suffered from a traumatic loss of a close friend and fell into a deep depression and the songs are about pulling myself out of that.

What have you got coming up in the future?

I’ve got a lot of songs started that need finishing but I think I’ll be working on recording a concept EP next about a fictional pirate I’ve created and just exploring a more traditional folk style for this one while I finish off the songs I’ve been writing. In terms of performance I’m hoping to get out of my usual bubble and play in some more venues I’ve not played before, maybe I’ll see if there’s any festivals that grab my attention.

Where can people find out more about you?

I’m all over the place, I have my website which is a bit of a hub for everything, I mostly post on my Facebook and Instagram pages but anywhere I am will be under @jakeholtmusic
