Who are you and where are you from?
We are an indie band based in Durham. We all met as students at the university so ironically none of us are originally from the North East but we’ve really come to love and feel at home in the music scene here.

What is it you do?
Just as much gigging and writing as we possibly can alongside our studies and work! We currently have two singles out, which did so much better than we could have imagined, and a debut EP releasing very soon. With support from BBC Introducing North East, we have had the pleasure of performing at some really cool local venues and events, most recently at the Stockton Calling festival which was tonnes of fun.

How long have you been doing it?
We officially formed back in January 2023 and began gigging around our university. Immediately we could tell we gelled really well when playing our favourite covers together, so we quickly built up a full set of original music which we now love performing at venues around the North East.

What inspires you?
When writing for ivies, our two songwriters Alice (vocals and keyboard) and Cole (guitar) are really driven by opposite sources – Alice finding motivation internally through her mental health and Cole externally from the world and people around him:

Alice: “Music is a constant for me, whether listening or playing. I can always count on it to take my mind off things and cheer me up. I write songs to get all the emotions off my chest and it’s gotten me through the hardest times. The artist ‘Blanks’ on YouTube really inspired me to experiment more with my writing”

Cole: “Whenever I want to get inspired, I put on headphones and go for a walk. I always end up noticing new things about the songs and think of music differently. I also find that workshopping songs with the band helps push me to write better and be more creative”

Tell us about your music.
Our music is a blend of genres that probably fits best under indie pop/rock. We really love indie bands like Arctic Monkeys and Peach Pit, while also being inspired by jazz, soul, and harder rock. Our vocalist and writer Alice particularly finds inspiration through artists such as Blanks, Lizzy McAlpine, and Billie Eilish. Lyrically, our songs tackle a mixture of angst and frustration with mental health, as well as fun, light-hearted, almost nonsense which you can already see in the two vastly different singles we have out so far. Our huge range of inspirations is really reflected in the fact that none of our songs sound the same – they each have their own unique character and that’s why we all love writing and performing together as a band. It’s so fun to see how each song takes a new sound when brought to the rest of the band, with the addition of riffs, grooves and rhythms written by Alfie (lead guitar), Ed (drums), and Kiko (bass).

What have you got coming up in the future?
Our debut EP, hardly my fault! We’re so so excited for its release on April 26th. It features three new tracks alongside our singles sick for a week and semi-detached.

We’re hosting an EP launch gig the night before on April 25th at The Angel in Durham – we’d love for as many people as possible to come celebrate with us! Two of our favourite Durham uni bands Happy Hour and 6 Foot Grandma will be supporting so we can’t wait.
