Who are you and where are you from?
Ian Mez Gordon & Chris Hall

What is it you do?
We run Counter Culture – A look into some of the most esoteric record collections around, no matter the genre, no matter the skill level or the person’s DJing history, we invite people to dig deep through their records and play whatever they want. Monthly, generally, on a Sunday from 3pm at The Georgian Theatre in Stockton, entry is free and everyone is welcome.

How long have you been doing it?
We’ve been doing it since November last year, we’ve already got a bunch of regulars. We’ve been collecting records for over 30 years.

What inspires you?
We’re inspired by the people of Teesside and their passion for music. If I go to someone’s house, it’s their record and book collections that I really want to look through (sometimes at the sacrifice of good conversation) Counter Culture is a way of getting that without knocking on random doors.

We also really want to get all these people in the same room at the same time.

Influences from further afield would be – Jean Michel Basquiet, Zaha Hadid, Downwards Records, Teenage Engineering, The Light Surgeons, Autechre (forever), Wishing I’d been at the Blue Note in the Nineties, Richard Millward, William Gibson, Irvine Welsh, tuned sound systems, going downhill, Mark E Smith, DJ Kicks, going to the builder’s merchants, Twin Peaks.

Tell us about your work/music.
If we’re not working on Counter Culture then we may be making things out of wood or creating a space for things to grow. Now and then I get the synths out and make some noise. In the olden days, between us we’ve designed stuff, screen printed stuff and run pubs.

What have you got coming up in the future?
The next Counter Culture is on February 4th at The Georgian Theatre bar from 3pm. After that, maybe building our own sound system, synth/drum machine workshops and the Counter Culture compilation (on vinyl.)

Where can people find out more about you?
At the moment we’re pretty low-key, there’s just a Facebook page, which you can find here.
