Who are you?
My name is Cece, I’m an 18-year-old college student in Newcastle. I release music under the name Cosial.

What is it that you do?
I’m a singer-songwriter and Cosial is my songwriting project. I’m part of a few bands, but with Cosial I have full creative control.

How long have you been doing it for?
For as long as I can remember, car journeys with my dad were filled with Leonard Cohen and Simon & Garfunkel, I’ve been force-fed poetry and melody from the get go. I wrote my first song at age 11 and I believe it was about peas – very hard-hitting, I know. I began to explore different topics (less vegetable centred) and haven’t stopped since! I always knew that I didn’t want to do anything other than music, so I started to pursue it as a career in 2020 when I ditched A-Levels and chose a music college. I formed bands with my friends in college, writing indie/punk tunes and playing gigs around the Northeast. I’ve been working on Cosial for a couple months, as a way to share my more personal, intimate songwriting.

What inspires you?
I have a very spitfire personality. My writing is often inspired by intense, isolated thoughts and feelings – there is nothing more satisfying to me than being able to articulate a specific undefined feeling, and I really look up to people that are able to do this in songwriting. I’m also extremely inspired by women in music – Mitski and Phoebe Bridgers to name a few. I really adore Mitski’s way of making her words the main focus of the music, with all instruments built around them. The music industry often feels like a ‘boys club’. Because I’m a girl, that automatically means I don’t know how to use a sound desk, or I need to be asked 100 questions about my equipment to prove I know how to use it. It’s ridiculous and off-putting, and I’m inspired by being a part of the ongoing change that blows this attitude into extinction.

Tell us about your music
I’d consider my songs indie/bedroom pop. Lyrically, I like to explore dark, subtle themes of sorrow and obsession, contrasting an upbeat instrumental style. To me, the contrast between the two reflects an unhealthy pattern, being aware of the issues but choosing to ignore them or cover them up. Recently, I’m starting to learn a lot more about production and being able to translate ideas in my head onto an instrument.

What do you have coming up?
My debut single will be released on February 11th! It’s called Tide and it was produced by Lisa Murphy. It centres around the classic ‘How I Met Your Mother’ relationship style of two people that just keep missing each-other. Feeling so close to someone but having a huge emotional barrier. I also have another single in the works so keep an eye out!

Where can people find out more about you?
You can find me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter at @cosialmusic on each platform. If you like the sound of my music, a like or a follow would be great!
