Reliably informed

North East songwriter and musician Chris Groom prepares to release piano-led new single Blackout Tonight. A stalwart of the music scene, having performed as keyboardist for the John P Taylor Band among others over his 30 year career, his easygoing style and personal lyrics make his music easy to identify with. Here, we find out more about him…

Who are you and where are you from?

I’m Chris Groom and I’m a musician and songwriter from Redcar. I started out playing keyboards for bands and artists such as The Southmartins, Rojor, Funk Collective and most recently The John P Taylor Band.

What is it you do?

I play piano, hammond organ, synth and also write, produce and record my own music.

How long have you been doing it?

I started playing around 35 years ago when my parents bought a tiny Yamaha PSS30 keyboard for me for Christmas. I started writing around six years ago when I had just come through quite a turbulent time in my life. My wife encouraged me to start writing and the first song I wrote and recorded is about her. In the past I have worked as a musical director, music lecturer and youth music development officer.

What inspires you?

Lots of things, science, time, history. I keep a notebook to jot down things people say or something I’ve read that I think could become a lyric. Hanging around with other musicians keeps me motivated to keep getting better.

Tell us about your music

The songs I write are very much inspired by real life events, whether they’re happening to me or somebody else. I love the sound of a piano and voice together so I tend to write songs with that arrangement. Although I’m currently writing an electronic piece with lots of synth.

What have you got coming up in the future?

My latest track comes out on 25th November and is called Blackout Tonight.

Where can people find out more about you?

People can contact me on Facebook and hear my music on Spotify.
