Who are you?
Hi, I’m Brass Monkey, a singer-songwriter & acoustic soloist from Sunderland.

What is it you do?
I produce a range of indie rock, focusing on grunge inspired blues rock but experimenting with the genres.

How long have you been doing it?
Before lockdown I’d been performing at open mics for ten years, cover gigs for five years and original gigs since releasing my first single in the summer of 2019.

What inspires you?
I have trouble with this question as I make music for it’s own sake. I’m honestly just trying to make a good sound that’ll make your head bop. That said, everything in life inspires my lyrics. Passion, love, injustice, anger, my blues rock tracks largely reflect the unfair treatment of the North & specifically the decimation of Sunderland industry.

Tell us about your music.
I describe my signature style as grunge inspired bluesy rock or dirty blues but different people hear different things. I’m often compared to Nick Cave & Eddie Vedder. Steve Spithray previously called “Breadline” a reworking of 60s garage comparing it to Alabama 3’s “Woke Up This Morning.” People keep saying it or “Nowhere” could be on the soundtrack of Peaky Blinders, The Sopranos or Sons of Anarchy

What have you got coming up in the future?
My new single Miracle is out 30th of January and is very different in style & genre. It’s being played by radio stations in 6 countries this week. It’s an optimistic pop rock love ballad in a time we all need a little cheer. Don’t worry though, I’ll be dropping an even angrier blues rock track in 3 months.
