Who are you and where are you from?
I’m Aurora Engine (real name Deborah Shaw), I’m a harpist/pianist/singer-songwriter and sound artist from Shildon in County Durham.

What is it you do?
I fuse real instruments (harp /piano), with voice and progressive electronica, writing, songs, creating soundscapes and telling stories. I love collecting sounds and weaving them into my work. I perform live sets blending acoustic and electronic textures, I also compose for film.

What inspires you?
So many things! My new album ‘Secret Knock’ which is out on 9th Feb 2024 is a collection of songs from troubled narrators –  I explore topics relating to women, as well as my experience of growing up in the North East (I sing in my own accent). ‘Miniature Self is a song about how women keep themselves small in order to navigate a patriarchal society. There is also a song about an imaginary friend that comes to life, a drunken brawl that ends in tragedy, a pornstar and counting until telegraph poles to tackle anxiety.

Tell us about your music.
I produced the album myself and really wanted to create a sonic world t I harvested sounds from my piano into soundscapes, I used extended techniques on the harp to provide some dreamy ethereal textures (including using an aeolian harp – where the wind plays the harp)!

What have you got coming up in the future?
My album will be out on 9th Feb 2024, I have a launch gig at The Cumberland Arms in Byker on Friday 23rd February, with support from Caroline Mary and Cath Stephens/Paul Grainger. I am then touring. Join my mailing list on my website for a discount on tickets and vinyl!
