The extraordinary debut feature by Georgia Oakley set in late 1980’s Newcastle will be screened at the Tyneside Cinema from 8th February
From Wednesday 8th February, indie movie theatre, Tyneside Cinema will be showing Blue Jean. This debut feature from Georgia Oakley is set in 1980s Newcastle and follows a queer PE teacher working whilst Section 28, a law against promoting homosexuality, is first introduced in the UK. Managing the school netball team during this time, Jean questions her profession and how she can behave in her work environment and struggles to balance her double life when a new student threatens to reveal her sexuality.
Fronted by an electric lead performance by Rosy McEwen, the film was the recipient of The People’s Choice Award at the 79th Venice International Film Festival.
The sold-out screening on Wednesday 8th February will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Director Georgia Oakley, producer Hélène Sifre and lead actors Rosy McEwen and Kerrie Hayes. However, for those who didn’t manage to bag tickets for that screening, don’t worry, because there are plenty of screenings from the official release date of Friday 10th February.
