Reliably informed

Summer Solstice is here and marks a turning point in the year when darkness finally gets a foothold in its tussle against the light, allowing winter to announce its intent. Signifying this change are Richmondshire’s alt-rap outfit Ceiling Demons with their new single From The Womb To The Grave, a dark and brooding new offering that, quite relevantly, discusses the themes of nature and cycles of life, death and rebirth.

The track is taken from their upcoming album, Snakes & Ladders, which will be released on vinyl via Butterfly Effect and Fake Four Inc. in the Autumn Equinox in September 2021 (there’s a pattern forming here).

Here the band, who have recently announced a show at the NE Volume Bar on Saturday 26th June, tries to encapsulate this latest offering by picking three tracks in our FFO feature…

Open Mike Eagle feat. Gold Panda – Ziggy Starfish (Anti-Anxiety Raps)
We have long been fans of Open Mike Eagles take on music with his ever conscious lyricism, wit and creative pop culture references that explore anxiety, depression and define his own art rap style. Following on from his successful Dark Comedy album he dropped the excellent A Special Episode EP in 2015 with the last track Ziggy Starfish (Anxiety Raps) featuring production from the UK electronic wizard Gold Panda. This collab works magnificently and we feel it shares a similar sonic vibe to our latest offering.

Joy Division – No Love Lost
This one is an absolute classic and one of our personal favourites. Despite not featuring on either of Joy Divisions initial album releases it most notably featured on the Substance collection. The rhythmic pulsing bass sets the tone and is accompanied by drums as the song starts. It is then joined by jolts of guitar along the way which drops in and out with chords and melody before the track kicks in half way through. The tone of Curtis’s vocals is magnificent and angsty as he sprays his words on the first verse before starting the spoken word part which always hits the chord. This is the kind of style we try to tap into during our live shows.

A7PHA – No Breaks
A7PHA is a collaborative project between underground US rappers Mestizo and Doseone. They’re both veterans in their own right with the latter being a co-founder of the inspirational left field indie-rap label Anticon. This self-titled album dropped in 2017 and immediately became a treasured release for us with its rich, layered electronic production and intriguing word-play – a sound we explore in our latest single.. A7PHAs mixture of dark imagery and cryptic lyrics is also something which really resonated with us and their lead single No Breaks captures this perfectly.
