North-East soul singer, Beth Macari releases Gotta Get Back, her 90’s soul and R&B inspired first single of 2021. The track is the first of many songs that Beth wrote during lockdown and sees her working with her long time band member and collaborator Phil The Beat. The release comes ahead of rescheduled shows that will be taking place in 2021, including support slots with Alexandra Burke on her UK tour and opening for Will Young at South Tyneside’s Summer Music festival.
We asked Beth to summarise the new single with three other tracks that encapsulate the sound, feeling or lyrical content of it.
Mahalia – I Wish I Missed My Ex
Ive been a fan of Mahalia for a while now, I went to see her in Glasgow a couple years back and she was class live.
I love that her lyrics are very honest and I can often relate to them. In this song the chorus is so catchy, which is what I wanted to create with ‘Gotta Get Back’, where you cant forget the words or the message behind the song. I used to always think I needed to do loads vocal acrobatics in my music but when I started to listen to artists like Mahalia, who are really relaxed and raw vocalists, it helped me chill out a little and just sing however I wanted to sing.
Olivia Deane – Echo
I really love the production on Olivia’s tracks, the instrumentation is really organic, its sounds kind of old school but with bang-up-to-date production. Her songs and her voice are just lush 🙂
Destiny’s Child – Say My Name
Firstly I just think this song is class, It’s such a feel good song, It always make me want to get up and sing & dance along. This is something I really wanted to achieve with ‘Gotta Get Back’, even though lyrically its about coming out of a bad situation, I still want the listener to feel positive when hearing it. Im a big fan of 90’s RnB, I cant deny I love a good throwback song and i wanted to bring some of those lush 90’s vibes to my new music.
