Over the past twelve months, our magazine and website have been brimming with super-talented, creative souls. We’ve asked a few of them to tell us about their 2020 and offer a few tips about great stuff they’ve seen, watched and read.

Here, Newcastle’s fast rising songwriter Martha Hill tells us about her 2020…

Surreal, ups, downs

What skills did you learn in lockdown?

I’ve started teaching myself clarinet but I’m pretty bad… also surfing and running! It’s been a good year for the outdoors since we can’t do anything inside.

Your favourite band/artist of the year?

Little Simz, Dominic Fike, Oliver Tree, Sylvan Esso, Ceitidh Mac, Me Lost Me, Ruth Patterson, Kay Greyson… there’s too many!!

Your favourite song of the year?

To Li – Jojo Abot

Favourite TV show of the year?

The Umbrella Academy

Best book you read?

Fiction: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Non fiction: Sapiens – A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

Venue you are looking forward to performing at next year?

I can’t WAIT till Cobalt Studios is back open, I miss it so much! Man… gigs!!! I’ll be at everything everywhere once it’s all back on.

What was your favourite gig/live stream event?

Ceitidh Mac did a lush one for Knockengorroch festival at the start of the year. Billie Eilish‘s was really interesting as well!

Any upcoming artists we should keep an eye out for in 2021?

Tom A Smith, Heidi Curtis, Ruth Patterson! The North East has big things coming.

Predictions for 2021?

Agghh…. who knows!?!? It’s dangerous to predict with a year like this ahead. We’ll just have to wait and see!

And finally, have you got anything in the pipeline for next year?

Yeah loads!!! I’ve got a tour at the end of April, I’ve been working on a lot of new music… some really exciting things have been falling into place at the end of this year and I can’t wait to share them with you all!
