We get to know the indie music makers Whale Hill a little better ahead of their EP release on Friday 2nd November and an EP release show at The Westgarth, Middlesbrough on Saturday 3rd November.

So tell us about yourself and what you do?
My name is Reece Mallett and I am the lead singer and guitarist for Whale Hill, Whale Hill started off as an inside joke between me and 2 friends in college and here we are later headlining Westgarth and releasing our first single.

What’s the first record you ever bought?
From what I can remember the first physical record I ever purchased was actually Plan B’s Defamation of Strickland Banks, which was a hit record at the time but I feel the diversity of tracks on that record are massively underrated.

What’s your guilty pleasure musically?
My musical guilty pleasure would probably have to be a lot of 1940-1960’s jazz and swing music which couldn’t be any further from our music but I always tend to lean towards putting on the likes of the Ink Spots, Dean Martin & Nat King Cole in my spare time if I need a break from the usual tracks.

Favourite film of all time?
My favourite of all time would probably have to be a tie between Trainspotting and Snatch.

One TV series to binge watch?
I’m currently watching through the Sopranos which is a great series to binge watch but for me the obvious answer is always going to be Breaking Bad, I’ve blasted through that show three times with no effort.

Favourite book?
I’m not particularly a big book reader but if I would have to say one it would have to be Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke, its just a shame the animated adaptation is a bit trash in comparison.

Who or what makes you laugh?
My friends, I’m always guaranteed to get a good story out of doing anything with my friends, they’re a bunch of characters which I imagine is what everyone believes their friends to be, but I’ve never met people like my friends before.

Who or what makes you sad?
Probably feeling like I played a bad show, i’m way too overcritical with everything I do so the littlest things can put me down about a show which i’ll feel like needs improving despite no one else noticing, its a blessing and a curse sometimes.

If you had a super power, what would it be?
The big ones gotta be time travel, the ability to just redo something correctly would have endless possibilities.

And finally, you get to play a board game with any three people, who are they and what’s the board game?
I’d have to say Ric Flair, Tyler the Creator and Mac Demarco, I feel like that would have potential to be an interesting time.

Whale Hill release their new EP Friday 2nd November and play The Westgarth, Middlesbrough on Saturday 3rd November.
