The UK’s national festival of the Humanities, Being Human, is returning for a second year from Thursday 12th until Sunday 22nd November, with Northumbria University Humanities Department hosting a series of free events under the theme Cities & Citizens. Events will range from film screenings and talks, to storytelling, pop-up museums and big debates.

Tyneside Cinema will be screening two films which get right into the human psyche: Coriolanus (starring Ralph Fiennes) will be accompanied by a talk exploring the violence and division of international urban conflicts on Thursday 12th, while The Witchfinder General (starring Vincent Price) will be followed by a Q&A on witchcraft and the policing of innocent citizens on Monday 16th.

A series of walks and talks including A Walk through Newcastle’s History, 1200-1800 (Friday 13th) and Stories of Migration & Home in Newcastle (Sunday 15th) will culminate in a weekend exploring local trailblazers. Musicians Benny Graham and Tony Corcoran will be performing at Newcastle’s Mining Institute (Friday 20th) for Tyneside Radicalism in Story & Song, which will give a flavour of revolt and rabblerousing in the North East through the ages.

The final talk, at Newcastle Castle’s Black Gate on Sunday 22nd, will tell the story of local lad John Lilburne (or Freeborn John to his pals) who helped shape ideas about human rights during the English Civil War period. Lilburne was recently named by Jeremy Corbyn as the historical figure he most admired. Whatever your opinion on politics, the Festival promises to explore how exactly Tynesiders have become so prolific, and what it is that makes people tick.

Being Human Festival takes place at various locations from Thursday 12th until Sunday 22nd November.
