VENUS GRRRLS recently dropped their brand new single, Hate Me, a two and a half minute garage rock banger with a poppy edge that is filled with raw, soulful vocals, addictive hooks and big stomping beats.

On the back of this release, the band gives us a bunch of fives…

Seeing as we miss touring so much we thought we’d reminisce with our top five songs to listen to on the road. Picture this, five Venus Grrrls in a Ford Fiesta estate packed to the brim with gear, heading up or down the M1 to play a show with these tunes blasting at full volume.

5. Rockstar – Yonaka
Not technically a tour song as Hannah discovered it mid pandemic but it’s been played a lot during our studio time over the last year. Just before the pandemic we had gone on a writing retreat in the North York Moors in a lovely converted chapel (literally in the middle of nowhere) and hearing the lyric “house up on mars” Hannah mistook it for “house on the moors” and sent it to us all to listen to. This, along with the songs theme, goes hand in hand with all of our ambitions as a band which is why it struck such a chord with us finding it mid lockdown especially in the mindset of just wanting to get back to gigging! Also it’s an absolute bop.

4. Edge Of Seventeen – Stevie Nicks
Back when we first started, we were making a stage backdrop at Jess’ house, painting in black paint ‘VENUS’ on a white sheet on her bedroom floor. We’d only known each other a couple of months at this point and were playing tunes as we painted. This song came on and immediately everyone wanted it turned up and we all sang it at the top of our lungs. A song that we all loved but didn’t know we all loved it yet! Unfortunately the VENUS we had painted leaked through the sheet onto Jess’ floor which made for an interesting clean up but this song remains a band fave and always gets played on tour.

3. Only Happy When It Rains – Garbage
An all time fave from the early days of Venus Grrrls, before we’d even played together GK had made a playlist of tunes that were inspiration for our sound and this was one of them. Carrying all the way through to our recent release of Goth Girl where we gave this song to our producers at Sugar House Music and said we wanna sound like this. We just love the synth and crunchy guitar combo.

2. Medicine – The Pale White
Not only on tour but whenever we’re together for absolutely anything we’re playing this song. All it takes is one of us to sing it and we’ve all got it stuck in our heads. It’s just such a flawless banging tune we can’t get bored of!

1. 99 Luftballoons – Nena
And last but certainly not least… We have no idea why we started listening to this but we do know that it was during the Freaky Friday tour in 2019, and that’s it’s become a ritual to listen to it every time we’re on tour at least once and is by far our most listened to song (and yes it’s the German version of 99 Red Balloons).
