Kitchen Practice is a new label founded by Lloyd Bolton and based between London (where he lives) and the North-East (where he is currently at uni and involved with several bands). It is home to a mix of new artists, ranging from the ambient electronica of Friends of the Monday Table to the art rock of Women’s Fashion and DIY indie project Spider Noises

The debut release from Kitchen Practice Records is Let It Bleeds, a cross-genre compilation of covers of different songs called Let It Bleed (by The Rolling Stones, Goat, John Phillips and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard) offers a glimpse into the nature of each band without taking the entire project too seriously.

Here, Lloyd tells us about his favourite indie labels with his bunch of fives…

Milk! Records
My favourite thing ever and the reason I am obsessed with the current Australian music scene. Started by the brilliant Courtney Barnett, this label is home to some of the most interesting artists in Melbourne, including Jade Imagine, Jen Cloher and The Finks alongside Courtney. They form a great musical community, popping up on each other’s albums and tour bills and in each other’s music videos. Theirs is the model that I aspire to with Kitchen Practice and they are the main inspiration for doing a compilation by all the bands on the label.

Postcard Records
The ultimate bedroom label, which attempted to emulate Warhol’s factory and put out a great set of singles by bands like Orange Juice, Fire Engines Josef K and The Go-Betweens. It is strangely significant for such a small and short-lived label, because it acted as a sort of focal point for a bunch of bands in Scotland at the time. I remember feeling really inspired by the documentary Big Gold Dream, which was about Postcard and their Edinburgh counterparts Fast Product. 

Third Man Records
My first love in the world of indie labels, I read a really interesting interview about it with Jack White in Mojo when I was 13. Its whole outlook and approach is really cool and they have such a great range of outlets. Obviously they put out a load of great garage and blues records beyond The White Stripes, including the excellent Bathtub Love Killingsby Olivia Jean. They also have a really cool series of singles by a range of artists done live in their ‘Blue Room’, their own publishing house and an old voice-o-graph open to the public in which Neil Young recorded an entire album in 2014! I like that they do so much stuff directly within their Nashville HQ as well. Third Man also gets bonus points for recently re-releasing the first three France Gall albums.  

Bedroom Suck Records
If Milk! got me interested in Australian music, Bedroom Suck are the ones that hooked me on it. They are home to a load of outstanding Australian artists that haven’t yet gotten much international attention like Totally Mild, Lower Plenty, Primitive Motion and Circular Keys and have rightly cost me a lot in international postage. They also just put out probably my favourite release of the year so far, Songs For Kidsby the wonderful Rabbit Island.

Speedy Wunderground
There’s not much left to say about how probably the most important label in British alternative music at the moment. Dan Carey is a genius of talent-spotting and production and his working with a new band should be taken as an instruction to check them out. Speedy Wunderground has worked with an overwhelming amount of my favourite new bands, including black midi, Black Country, New Road, Lazarus Kane, Sinead O’Brien and PVA. I believe they also have something in the works with the awesome Drug Store Romeos as well!
