Bunch Of Fives: Izzy Finch (Topsoil)

Topsoil is a queer gardening club that takes place from Friday 7th April (10.30am-12.30pm) at The NewBridge Project.  They are looking for a diverse group of people to come together each week to help grow a garden and a community through a programme of co-created activity. Those who take part will learn from local, queer practitioners how to grow their own food, as well as deepen knowledge around sustainability, queer ecology, natural dyes and how growing and gardening is a radical act of resistance.

1. Cyprus Hill- Dr. GreenThumb
There is something about hip-hop that just makes sense when it comes to gardening. Rhythmic and lyrically on point. 

2. Sepultura- Roots Bloody Roots
Who doesn’t want to scream along to the chorus of this while planting a few trees?!

3. Baits – Compost Face
This is such a tune, ‘compost face’ was a strong contender as a potential name for our queer gardening club at The NewBridge Project but TopSoil ultimately won.

4. Rachel Jenkins- Allergy Season
Had to include something from the “queer, sad girl” genre and this is top. I love the metaphor of an allergic reaction being used to convey deep yearning.

5. Sa-Roc- r(E)evolution
The bit where she says “Hello, this is revolution, get on up” resonates deeply with the underpinning theory and framework that is behind a project like TopSoil. I am really invested in the ability that community arts projects have for being a place where knowledge is generated, shared and collectively nourished.
