Beverley Knight reviews the emotional new release from yllwshrk
EOA Recordings
Released: 16.10.20
I already knew I would be smitten with I Am Aladdin as soon as I read that some of yllwshrk’s members contributed to A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead. A collective of classically trained musicians, they are technically skilled, yet exude heart and soul, nailing their cross-genre stance and seeking every opportunity to collaborate with other artists to bring out their best.
Arsenik is six minutes of funk, theatre and moods enhanced by strings underscoring a hard rock guitar solo, and Smudge startles you with sharp bursts of full orchestra creating the effect of radio tuning. I could write reams about all nine songs and was easily moved to tears.
