House Of Mythology
It’s to Ulver’s credit that you never know what to expect from them, (see last year’s excursion into quasi-prog territory), so we shouldn’t be surprised that this is their self-proclaimed pop project. We should probably be surprised that it’s.., well, awful.
This is no rockist prejudice – I love pop – but this is a car crash blend of sickly Europop power ballads and leaden 80s beats ( I’m sure can hear a keytar). Coming Home has a certain menacing charm but nothing else here is less than an affront and I can actually picture the Hoff covering some of these tunes. The continued involvement of Grumbling Fur’s Daniel O’Suillivan should have given them some decent pop chops, but this a neon-lit disaster.
